Aesthetic Medicine Scope of Practice for RNs

Understanding supervision requirements and career pathways as an RN in aesthetic medicine.

RN Supervision Requirements

RNs must work under the supervision of a physician, NP, or PA when performing aesthetic procedures. Supervision requirements vary by state—some allow general supervision while others require the supervising provider to be on-site. Your clinical skills in patient assessment and injection techniques transfer well to aesthetics, making RNs highly valued in medical spas and cosmetic practices.

Common questions about aesthetic training for registered nurses.

Yes, registered nurses can perform aesthetic procedures such as Botox and dermal filler injections under physician supervision. The specific scope of practice varies by state, but RNs in most states can administer cosmetic injectables when properly trained and working under the supervision of a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant as required by state law.
Supervision requirements for RNs vary by state. Most states require RNs to work under the supervision of a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant when performing aesthetic procedures. Some states require direct supervision while others allow general supervision. AAOPM training prepares you to work within your state's regulations, and we recommend checking with your state board of nursing for specific requirements.
All AAOPM courses are AAOPM certified. Additionally, select courses may award continuing education credits when applicable based on course requirements. Upon successful completion, you receive an AAOPM Certificate of Completion documenting your training.
Trained aesthetic RNs can work in medical spas, dermatology practices, plastic surgery offices, wellness centers, and cosmetic clinics. Many RNs advance to lead injector roles, training positions, or management. Some pursue additional education to become nurse practitioners specializing in aesthetics, which expands their scope of practice and career opportunities.
AAOPM aesthetic training combines didactic instruction with hands-on practice. Courses include classroom learning covering anatomy, product knowledge, injection techniques, and patient assessment, followed by supervised hands-on training with live patients. Most courses are completed in 1-2 days, with options available at training locations nationwide.
