Treatments for hair loss represent the second largest segment of aesthetic procedures performed in the United States.  There are over 70 million Americans that suffer from hair loss and hair miniaturization with of 20 million being female.  The new treatment options for alopecia, PCOS, and endocrine system changes allow for the reversal and correction of hair loss for a majority of your patients.  New technology, Platelet Rich Plasma, Biologics (amniotic tissue), Red LED Light Therapies, and new physician only topical prescriptions give patients and physicians options for the correction and reversal of hair loss and hair thinning.

Hair loss treatment therapies are expected to keep growing through 2026 as the number of men and women increases based on population trends (aging population), knowledge of treatment options (patient education), growing discretionary income, and the emphasis by newer generations on their outward appearances.  Hair loss amongst men is about 58% and with perimenopausal women there is a 25% chance of hair shedding.  The psychosocial issues associated with hair loss has real importance tp patients who are actively seeking treatments and solutions. Though many forms of hair loss have a hereditary component it does not affect the newer forms of prevention and treatment that give correction and reversal of hair loss in both men and women.

Overall medical (non-surgical) hair loss treatments represent a very large percentage of the market but are very fragmented with small private practices. Annual revenue exceeds $3.5B and is expected to grow 5.7% each year through 2025.

The American Academy of Procedural Medicine (AAOPM) Hair Loss Treatment Therapy Training will instruct you in the latest individual and combination therapies including various mechanical, prescription, and biological treatment options (PRP, LED light therapies, biologics) including the use of supplements.  The instruction will include the latest science for physicians to fully understand the pathophysiology for hair growth, hair loss, and proper identification and cause for the alopecia. The latest evidenced based scientific data is presented such as gene expression, stem cell markers/receptors, hormonal considerations, growth factors, and other data to provide evidenced based information to the efficacy and rationale for treatments.

Differences between men and women are discussed throughout the program as the reasoning for their hair loss and patterns of alopecia are not the same.  Men typically have “hair miniaturization” that relates to excessive conversion of DHT that damages the hair follicle over time and allows for early ejection (catagen stage) of the hair and the hair will grow miniaturized over a period of time until the hair is dormant.  Over a period of time this dormancy will not allow a new hair to grow and fibrosis of tissue will take place and why early detection of hair loss is important as it does become progressive.

Female hair loss and female pattern baldness is increasing among newer generations most likely due to environmental issues.  Typical female hair loss is defined as “hair shedding” where there is rapid ejection of the existing hair due to changes to the endocrine system and/or conditions such as PCOS.  Other hormonal factors, interaction with certain drugs, and other health issues affecting thinning hair and shedding and complete protocols for the diagnostic testing of these various scenarios are given at the program. Bottom line is that the loss of hair and hair thinning is multi-factorial and combination treatments should always be considered and in determining the pathways for treatment.

The treatment options associated with the various types of alopecia are explained in detail and you will receive protocols for the proper up-to-date testing for the clinical solutions for reversing hair loss and thinning. Combination therapies using PRP, micro needling, amniotic tissue (growth factors), and mechanical treatments (Red LED Light Therapies) are given.  The hands-on training in the afternoon will include Platelet Rich Plasma and will showcase the injection techniques and standard of care considerations for the patient.  Specifically the various protocols and regimens we discussed within the program include:

  • Minoxidil (oral and topical) and the new revolutionary physician only 82M product family.
    • Finasteride (oral and topical) and physician only prescription Finasteride+
    • Spinolactone and derivatives (PCOS, acne – women)
    • Cyproterone Acetate (PCOS, acne – women)
    • Natural Supplements as conjunctive treatments
    • Platelet Rich Plasma (hands-on training, dual spin systems)
    • Other Biologics (i.e. amniotic tissue additives) for use with Platelet Rich Plasma
    • Use of Low Level Laser Technologies (LLT) and Red Light Therapies-post treatment options.

Other technologies are presented to give additional retail options and technologies for diagnostic considerations such as “Hair Check System” which allows for physicians to create a base-line for hair, measure improvement for regrowth of hair, and allow for early detection for thinning hair years in advance. Retail options for patients are presented and include physician only product lines and prescriptions for hair regrowth as well as the Red LED Light therapies with patient models such as hair cap systems and other handheld devices for patients.

In addition, the instructors for AAOPM have years of experience and have been presented with numerous patients presenting hair loss issues, hair thinning and loss of hair is very complex and is still not understood.  The faculty of the AAOPM have the experience to discuss other diagnostic tools and offer their insights for the complex patient or patients that may be unresponsive to treatments discussed.

Objectives for the Hair Loss Therapies Training

  • Red Light Therapy

Understand and evaluate patients considering medical hair loss therapies and experiencing hair loss and thinning:

    • Understand hair anatomy, hair growth cycles, and hair loss etiologies and be able to identify the various types of alopecia: including Androgenic Alopecia (Male Patterned Baldness (MPB), Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), Alopecia Areata, Telogen Effluvium, and Traction Alopecia.
    • Review the various hair loss protocols and standard of care considerations for evaluation including medication review, medical tests and screening, hormone testing, and physical findings of the scalp in relation to hair loss or thinning.
    • Gain a full understanding of the etiology as it relates to the available, effective treatment options including those related to medical conditions (disease), medications, hormonal, and genetic. Learn the differences between male and female alopecias and other types of underlying possible causes for hair loss in women (i.e. PCOS).
    • Learn the principles and gain a working knowledge of medical hair loss therapies including medications (minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride), hormone blockers (spinolactone, cypoterone acetate), natural supplements, injectable therapies (PRP, ACell), and various light based energy devices (ie, Red Light Therapies, Laser Light Energies).
    • Learn other technologies being utilized in combination with the mechanical and clinical solutions presented to enhance patient care.
    • Additional AAOPM Pathways for certification and professional enrichment are presented and discussed.
    • Gain the necessary knowledge to implement these new procedures. Included with the course you will receive all new patient intake forms, administrative forms, informed consents for treatment, protocols (incl. diagnostic testing), as well as the marketing information and pearls to properly promote these hair loss treatment therapies.

As with all of the procedural courses offered by the American Academy of Procedural Medicine (AAOPM), we want you to be successful in performing these new procedures but integrating these procedures within your practice and become successful with these new procedures.

8:30am–9:00am • Sign in and Registration.
9:00am–9:30am • Speaker (Instructor) Introduction, Overview of current market conditions, applications, newest advancements in technologies, and various strategies being used in the treatment of alopecia conditions for men and women.
9:30am-10:15am • Review of the anatomy and physiology of Hair Growth including stem cell interactions, stem cell markers, signaling pathways, and the various growth factors associated with hair regrowth. Review the most common causes of hair loss including hormone interactions and androgenic hair (AGA) loss in men and women and be able to consult with patients prospective treatment modalities for hair loss patients after an initial evaluation.
10:15am–10:30am • Break
10:15am–11:30am • Brief History of Treatments, Common Causes / Less Common Causes of Hair Loss, Diagnostic testing of hair loss in men, Scarring and Non-Scarring Alopecias, Male Pattern Baldness, Categorization, Drug Interactions – Hair Loss. Clinical Solutions for Reversing Hair Loss in Men
11:30am–12:00pm • Medical and Relative Contraindications, Adverse Events, and treatment protocols for men including combination therapies; PRP, Red Light, Prescriptions etc.
12:00pm–1:00pm • Lunch.
1:00pm—2:00pm • Female Pattern Baldness (FPB), Review of Hormones (Endocrine System), Stress and immune function; Alopecia Areata, Trichotillomania, Telogen Effluvium, and Androgenic Alopecia (AGA). Review guidelines for PCOS patient diagnosis and the various treatment options including other syndrome symptoms. Final review of suggested systems and protocols (decision matrix) for new or existing patients. Final review of the various clinical testing for female alopecia and interpretation of results including simple natural supplementation and hormonal options as adjuncts to treatment.
2:00pm–2:15pm • Break.
2:15pm–3:00pm •  Detailed review of treatment options for female patients, Red LED Light, Drug Therapies, 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors, BHRT therapies, and supplements. Understand the specific protocols for hair loss treatments using Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and other uses of PRP.  Anesthesia Options including Occipital Blocks, Ring Blocks, and complete care post treatment for patients are discussed in detail as well as patient consultation considerations and creating realistic expectations for patients.
3:00pm–5:30pm • Hands-On sessions with live volunteer patients using a dual spin PRP dedicated system. Physicians will be required to administer PRP to patients in order to show proficiency for final certification in the Alopecia PRP procedure.
